Here’s a bug shaped robot entered into the open 7400 competition. Power by a solar panel, this 7400 logic based robot moves toward the life giving light source.

Powered by a solar panel, this miniature robot shuffles towards the light.  This project was a venture into BEAM robotics, a now seemingly defunct genre characterized by simple circuits with complex behavior. This autonomous, bug-shaped beast soaks up sunshine on its solar panel and converts it to bursts of movement on its tiny motors.

7400 competition entry: Quiz Show Buzzer

Need a quiz show buzzer system? Check this out!

A Quiz Show Buzzer was just built only with 74XX series device. A single 74LS373 Octal D-Type Flip Flop was used instead of several AND gates. Eight DATA INPUTs serve as quizzer’s user interface and the eight DATA OUTPUTs were connected to 8-input AND gate which provide the logic HIGH or LOW to GATE INPUT of 74LS373, the purpose of this is to disable all inputs after the first output became logic HIGH. The logic signal from DATA OUTPUTs can be use to drive a 7-segment display (for displaying quizzer’s number) and SSR (for indicator).

Since I was born in mid eighties, I’ve never experienced real 74xx build. Few gates here and there was common, but lager designs were practicaly uneeded – as microcontrollers, CPLDs or FPGAs replaced need for such as work.
But my posession in vintage systems and desire to understand inner working principles of modern devices brought me to design of simple CPU made of simple 74xx devices.

WORKSHOP VIDEO: Mumbai’s Manish and Lamington Road markets

Sorry: the post went live before we finished the video…Should be working in a second.

Originally we weren’t going to tour Mumbai, but some scheduling issues left us there for an extra day. This gave us this amazing opportunity to visit Manish and Lamington Road electronics markets in Mumbai.

Manish market has replacement parts for consumer products like phones, tablets, laptops, etc… Since these products are produced in massive quantities the replacement parts are dirt cheap. It makes sense to design your project around as many of these parts as you can. For locals sourcing these parts is much faster than ordering from larger electronics distributors like Mouser or Digikey. Some stands do tiny services like duplicate and dump SD cards.

Lamington Road is an electronics parts bonanza. LEDs, solar panels, connectors, surface mount, and through hole parts are all sold in the area. Some shop that specialize in selling scavenged electro-mechanical parts like stepper motors.

MSP430 LaunchPad 4 channel logic analyzer update

OPossum already designed a MSP430 LaunchPad logic analyzer based on our Logic Shrimp. In the latest update he decided to follow our lead in changing the 4 23K256 SRAM ICs for a single 23LC1024 IC.

Preliminary design of a 4 channel version using the new 23LC1024 SPI RAM.
Hope to find some time this weekend to build it.

FT311D errata: The IC doesn’t work with Android v4.1 and above

We designed a breakout board for the FT311D Android Open Accessory (AOA) ICs. We got the prototypes in our workshop, and in the free PCB drawer. Only thing missing is for FTDI to start selling them. In this waiting period we stumbled onto the errata for this IC.

There are two errors reported in the errata for the current revisions of the chip. One doesn’t enumerate the Android device properly if the device is repeatedly disconnected, and reconnected. The other is far more problematic.

The way we understand this errata, FT311D ICs will not work with Android v4.1 (and above) devices, and there is no workaround. The problem comes down to the fact that the chip was designed for the AOA v1.0 while Android 4.1 and above use AOA 2.0.

Training module: Austria Microsystems AS1130 LED driver chip


Digi-Key has a training module on using the Austria Microsystems AS1130 LED Driver chip. The AS1130 can drive 132 LEDs with one chip via the “Crossplexing” technique similar to Charlieplexing. The AS1130 features include a built-in scrolling function. The 38 page PDF datasheet is available here.

Workshop Update for Halloween, October 31st, 2012

We’re hard at work editing the Mumbai leg of our Global Geek Tour of India. We’ll hopefully get this done on schedule for tomorrow.

Today we sent out acrylic case orders to Seeed for all our Sick of Beige standard sizes. Expect them to pop up in a few weeks. Both golden ration, and square sizes have been submitted. Everything from the tiny 3cmx3cm square case to the Eagle maximum 10cmx8cm case have been ordered.

7400 competition entry: 1 bit microcontroller

Check out Giuseppe’s Open 7400 competition entry. It’s a 1 bit microprocessor based on the MC14500 CMOS chip.

This circuit is based on the CMOS chip MC14500. This chip is an ICU (industrial control unit) built from Motorola few years ago, it is a 1 bit processor that can do some logical operations. This chip is now discontinued but can be found on ebay and other sites.
My circuit probably doesn’t have an application in real world, but can be useful for didactic purposes, to learn how a simple microprocessor works.

Microchip’s new XC++ compiler

Microchip yesterday announced the XC++ compiler for PIC32 microcontrollers. It’s free to use, but comes with code optimization restrictions in the free version. This compiler adds support for C++ code, and comes with built in Dinkumware template libraries

The MPLAB XC32++ supports all of Microchip’s 32-bit PIC32 microcontrollers (MCUs).  This compiler enables designers to develop and re-use C++ projects by making all of Microchip’s C language extensions available in an environment that is compliant with the majority of C++98 and C++2003 ANSI standards.  Additionally, the Free MPLAB XC32++ Compiler includes Dinkumware® standard C, C++, and template libraries.

 

AVR/V-USB combo tool hacks Win 7


András Veres-Szentkirályi, IT security expert, OSCP, GWAPT, writes, “I’ve built a device that acts as a USB HID keyboard, enters a script as a series of keystrokes into a PC, which can extract itself into an executable. This in turn can send files on the PC back to the device using the NUM/CAPS/SCROLL lock LED status reports, so it can be used to transfer files into and out from PCs that are locked down, so that only a display/keyboard/mouse can be connected to it.” He built this device as part of a presentation at the recent Hacktivity 2012 conference. The presentation slides can be downloaded as a 16-page PDF from the Silent Signal homepage.

Workshop Update for October 30th, 2012

Sorting video. Videos will be released over three weeks, the first will be Mumbai on Thursday.

Ian registered a new company that will partner with us to retail experimental PCBs, projects, and other stuff too small or random to go into Seeed Studio. Our new partner will take money and ship orders – basically the huge thing we’ve never been able to do. Bank and PayPal accounts were also opened. More on that soon.

7400 competition entry: 7400 Logic Based Calculator

7400 Logic Based Calculator is the open 7400 competition entry by students of the Pakistani Institute of Industrial Electronics Engineering. This was an assignment during their 6th semester course Digital Electronics II.

Digital logic based calculator built on 7400 series ICs which can add and subtract two digits with clear, and backspace as well

This project is made to perform calculations on 5-Bit signed data. Meanwhile we also need to implement logic to detect the type of input user pressed, and to perform operation as required. After all these things have been implemented we just need to display our data using 7-segment decoder to 7-segment display.

Eagle Parts: Folding micro SD card socket and the PIC24F16KA102 microcontroller in SOIC-W and SSOP packages

The latest parts to be added to our Eagle part’s library are the folding micro SD card socket, and the PIC24F16KA102 microcontroller. The symbol for the PIC is connected to the SOIC-28W, and SSOP-28 footprints. Check out a picture of it below.
