Make your own Nixie tube socket tutorial

Electronics Lab brings us a tutorial on how to build sockets for IN-14 Nixies. The idea is simple. Use the spacer that comes with the Nixie, and insert female pinheaders into it. All that’s left is to shorten the leads coming from the Nixie, and you got a Nixie socket.

    Brilliant. I’ve been sampling various recessed pin receptacles from Mill-Max (and others) but I couldn’t find a solution I was happy with. I’m looking forward to trying this one out.

    Doesn’t look like the tutorial mentions it specifically, but use machined pin headers. Otherwise, you might not get the nice results you expect! :)

    I’ve hot-glued nixie tubes down, wire-wrapped to the pins sticking out, then simply soldered the wires to the interface PCB. Not exactly plug-replaceable, but no solder involved and it doesn’t take that long to replace a bum tube. I was worried about the thin insulation on the wire-wrap wire given the nixie drive voltage – but no problems were encountered.
