This clock uses a minimalist design constructed in the shell of an old hard drive. A DS1307 Real Time Clock (RTC) module keeps accurate time while an ATMega328 (with Arduino bootloader) microcontroller determines which LEDs should be lit to display the current time in binary.
Ever since receiving my binary watch a while back, I’ve wanted to make a desk clock version. As this is my first crack at one, I thought I’d keep things basic and make it simply tell the time. No alarms or other fruit.

Breaking out a QFP Attiny88 AVR

Several months ago I noticed the Attiny88. It has several more I/O than the Atmega328, with an extra Port A and PC7. And unlike most of the other Attiny series, it has real SPI instead of USI, so libraries using SPI don’t have to be re-written. At just 86c for qty 1, it is the also the cheapest AVR with 8KB flash. Since QFP-32 parts aren’t easy to work with, I searched for breakout boards and found QFP32 to DIP32 boards that would allow me to use them in a small breadboard.

Changes

Based on a survey of the first hacker camp we’ve tweaked the morning talks. Three days of talks was just too much. We reduced it to 2 days, and will dish out bite size bits of info in rapid succession. Sleep in after Friday’s party and finish the reballing course refreshed!

Tickets for the first camp were priced so we could break even. That didn’t happen… The price has increased now that we have some experience planning the event.

We still want everyone to have a chance to be involved so there’s three classes of tickets. We’ll trust you to make the right choice. You’re at our mercy in China after all!

Random spottings in Huaqiangbei electronics market

In search of a powerful frickin’ laser we visited this stand. They were really up front that the 6Watt label was incorrect, but the 2.5Watt output of this little handheld laser was still impressive. For a little demo she showed us that it could melt a piece of solder in half…with a bit of effort. The box under it burned nicely though. 700RMB, a bit more than 100USD, before any bargaining.

This new building has been going up for a year. Its quite stylish compared to anything else in the area.

You may have heard of the MacDonald’s supplier issue in China. This menu isn’t breakfast, they’ve just run out of anything else and now serve breatfast sandos all day long.

DIY automatic water timer

Now that I have power and output figured out, I need to work on the control aspect. 555 timers are great for simple applications requiring up to a few minutes of delay. At 10 minutes, the RC values needed would boarder the danger zone of the timer not functioning correctly due to the leakage current of the capacitor and the small charge current of the resistor. I could have cascaded two or more timers together but that would be sloppy so I fell back on my trusty friend – the ATtiny micro controller. This would allow me to make changes as I want without redesigning the board.

Simple temperature control system

A simple temperature control system for 3D print or other constant temperature control purpose by Xiang:

I plan to build a home-made 3D printer controlled by my Raspberry Pi, which, unfortunately, does not have any analog data acquisition pin. Therefore I decide to build a stand-alone temperature control system.
The idea is very simple. I use a power resistor as the heater and a thermistor as the temperature sensor. The system contains an LM324 quad op-amps chip. One op-amp is used as a comparator to compare the thermistor resistance with a nominal resistance and output LOW or HIGH as the comparison result. The other three op-amps inside the LM324 are used to perform some linear transformation and output a voltage that is proportional to the thermistor temperature. This voltage is applied to a 0-30V voltmeter so one can read the temperature. A N-Channel MOSFET transistor is used to control on/off of the heater.

The Nanite 85

Recently, Olimex anncounced the Olimexino 85s, claimed to be the “World’s smallest Arduino ever“. Now, that looks like a challenge. I guess it is about time to show off what has been on my desk since some time last year: The Nanite, pictured below.
I designed this board for fun after the Digispark and, subsequentally, the Adafruit Trinket were announced. The motivation was to have my own ATtiny85 based development board based on a USB bootloader and optimized for the ubiquitous 170 point mini-breadboards. In contrast to the Digispark it even sports a reset button. However, it lacks an integrated voltage converter as it is supposed to be powered by USB.

Ian is scheduled for a talk at Maker Villa, where discussions will include the growing influence of digital platforms, such as the melhores sites de apostas online, on various tech and social trends. There’s a tentative plan to make this a Sin-Ma-Thai-Cam-Vie “hackers on a train” journey, taking sleeper trains and buses from Singapore up to Shenzhen. The trip will include a day at Maker Villa before concluding at the second Hacker Camp Shenzhen, where participants can share insights and innovations.

PyroElectro: Who can build the best P-O-V contest

Electric Imp – Weather display

Found a much better use for the 2049 board – a simple, cheap weather forecast display…
This picture shows an Electric Imp device delivering a 4×4 pixel image to the 2049 board from a server on the west coast of the USA…
The 4×4 pixel image itself is simply a debug image that proves that the system works.
The next step is to harvest weather data from the Met Office (Datapoint API) and have the server Agent convert this data into a series of animations for the 4×4 display to show.
By a weird coincidence the 2049 board is a perfect size for pairing up with an Electric imp dev board (“impee-april rev3”). That was totally unplanned!

Wavetek 907 repair, YIG oscillator teardown

As I mentioned in my previous posting, there was an issue with my Wavetek 907 microwave frequency generator. While everything was fine during my initial testing, the frequency display is now stuck with an out-of-range display and the adjustable frequency range is limited to between around 6.9 Ghz to 7.9 Ghz (instead of all the way up to 11 Ghz). My initial suspicion was that the PTC heater inside the YIG-Gunn oscillator was malfunctioning. But as it turned out, it was something else.
Since initially my gut feeling told me that the YIG oscillator might be at fault, I thought I would at least try taking it apart to see if it was something trivial to fix. And even if it is beyond economical repair, it would at least be a pretty interesting teardown of the YIG oscillator itself.

Yihua and Depu electronics market visit

Today we piled into a taxi with visiting hackers to check out two electronics markets. Both are about an hour north of Shenzhen in Shajin, a very industrial area. We have high hopes of finding more equipment and tools than are available in huaqiangbei.

Top on our list was a USB controlled wire cutter Zach Hoeken saw a few weeks ago, a laser cutter, and a resistor forming machine.

First up is Yihua. A single single building with one floor of tools and supplies.

Its a lot quieter than huaqiangbei, and the range of stuff caters more to building a production line (equipment and sensors) than feeding one (components).

A couple guys in the parking lot told us about another market called Depu. There’s no taxis up here so we flagged down a tuktuk uncle. Word to the wise, tuktuks with a couple big foreigners don’t belong on the freeway. Uncle said he was scared of us because all foreigners are so big, and feared us in war.

We arrive at Depu in one piece, it looks promising.

This place is absolutely massive and covers two floors.

Depu was closer to the tool and equipment Utopia we were looking for, but its still mostly components and parts. Prices are 10 to 40% cheaper than huaqiangbei and machines were even cheaper than Taobao. If you’re in Shenzhen for a while, Depu might be worth a visit.

Unfortunately we don’t get to cram a new laser cutter or wire cutter into the trunk of the taxi, but it was definitely worth a look.

Tripping to Shajin equipment market

Cruising through Bao’on on way to Shajin tools and equipment market. I’ve never been to this one, but Oomlout and Zach Hoeken both says there’s tons of great stuff. We are looking for a wire cutter and stripped machine, as well as a small laser cutter for blasting polyimide. You can probably guess what the laser cutter is for.

Hopefully no taxi death this time. Will post photos and a review on way back from the market.
