The graphics for both sides of the case are still not 100%, suggestions are more than welcome.
I’m still looking how to fill the circles next to each pin name with a different color, a not water soluble material, and cheap! So any cable coding could be labeled on the case.

STL and graphics files should be on thingiverse soon.
This design could be cheaply mass produced using a plastic injection molding process.

1988 TTL logic data book

I don’t know if you guys have seen this yet, but TI has their 1988 TTL Logic Data Book for only $0.10. I have received 3 copies and the total cost, including shipping (US), was only $0.30!

TI describes this book as:

Texas Instruments presents pertinent technical information on their broad line of TTL integrated circuits. This edition covers everything from standard TTL and Schottky TTL circuits to CMOS logic and VSLI processors. It also explains function tables, parameter measurement information and typical characteristics related to TTL products.

TI doesn’t provide any further specs on the number of pages, etc., but at 10 cents who can resist? You can order it from TI estore.

Arduino IDE hack speeds up code compile

Paul Stoffregen over at PJRC sent us a link to this video highlighting how to modify the Arduino IDE by editing the boards.txt file to allow the compiler to use precompiled files. This helps to speed up the overall compile and upload process. A cool enhancement originally developed for the Teensyduino board.

Paul submitted this mod as an enhancement to the official Arduino IDE and it’s under consideration by the Arduino team. He asks you to give this mode a beta test and submit any comments to the “Issue 638” link given at the end of the video.

7400 competition entry: 2 bits divider/multiplier

Here’s an entry in the Open 7400 Logic Competition: 2 bits multiplication and division

This Project concerned to the Laboratory of Digital System has the objective to build a prototype which makes simple operations like multiplication and division between two operands of two bits. The operation result will be encoded in BCD (Binary Coded Decimal) which has four bits. When there is error of arithmetic (a division by 0, for example) or when the result is not exact, there will be two separated outputs to show this result.

LCD adapters for the Bus Pirate v4

Pietja made two LCD adapters for the Bus Pirate v4:

First a cheap, fast, bi-directional passive adapter. The second adapter is an update on the existing BPv3 adapter with PWM or manual control for the backlight and contrast. On both adapters the BP can sense the contrast voltage, there are solder jumpers to select the supply voltage to the LCD and solder jumpers to swap the backlight pins.

Limited support during Open Hardware Summit and Maker Faire

Today we’re going to New York for the Open Hardware Summit (Thursday, 15th) and Maker Faire (Saturday 17th, Sunday 18th). We’ll check in regularly and provide as much support as we can. Internet will be better than the Maker Faire Bay Area. The blog will have pictures and coverage of all the events, and the other stuff we do.

If you’re at either event please stop by and say hi. We’ll have some free PCB codes to give away, just ask!

Schedule:

Open Hardware Summit Thursday 15th, tickets are still available:

  • 5:00-6:00 – A breakout with Eric Pan, founder of Seeed Studio. We’ll discuss open hardware manufacturing.
  • 6:30 – See the Thermal Tweeter live at the closing cocktail event.
  • Other times – We don’t like speeches, so I’ll be hanging around outside during the keynotes if possible.

Maker Faire New York:

  • Friday evening – There’s free food and beer for MF participants during setup. We’ll be there to scope the space, take pictures, and get free food.
  • Saturday and Sunday – Come play with the Thermal Tweeter or get a demo of Bus Pirate v4. We’ll be there all day, along with Brian from teho Labs. Who knows what trouble we may cause :)

We only wear DIY site swag clothes, so if you see someone in a Dangerous Prototypes shirt it’s probably us. If you’re there please stop by and say hi. Meeting people is why we go to these, and it’s the best part.

SkyNET air drone hacks wifi on the fly

Researchers at the Stevens Institute of Technology have designed and built the prototype of a WiFi hacking air drone based on the AR.Drone quadcopter. They added a lightweight single board computer with Debian Linux installed, along with 3G mobile broadband connectivity and two WiFi cards (the second for packet injection.) A GPS receiver and sonar module are also onboard providing latitude, longitude and altitude readings.

Once airborne the SkyNET can locate, attack and infect other computers via WiFi. Its remote control capabilities allow the operator to control the interaction with these hosts making it possible to establish botnets.

CPLD ring oscillator

Frank shared a ringoscillator made from a CPLD. It creates a ~18MHz clock with no crystal or external oscillator:

A ringoscillator can be implemented through a shiftregister with an inverted input.

The ringoscillator is feeding a counter and the counter is feeding the two leds.

The most critical part was to prevent xst from optimizing away the ringoscillator. This is achieved by the “keep” syntheses attributes.
