7400 competition entry: Water level indicator

Arup made his first entry in the Open 7400 compettition.

This is a simple water level indicator circuit which can be used to indicate water at 3 stages EMPTY, LOW and FULL by three respsctive LEDs. The heart of this circuit is a 4011 NAND IC.

Ford and Bug Labs develop open-source R&D platform


According to Ford Motor Company’s press release, they are partnering with Bug Labs

* Ford and Bug Labs, an open-source hardware and software provider, announce a joint development project to research, develop and distribute open-source developer tools to advance in-car connectivity innovation.
* Known as “OpenXC,” the research platform is based on Bug Labs’ open-source Bug System and will enable the developer community to quickly prototype ideas and test out affordable new connectivity concepts that could enhance Ford’s future products.

At the recent TechCrunch Disrupt San Francisco, the two companies presented a demonstration based on OpenXC, including a socially-networked in-car fuel economy monitor connected to the Internet, via Bug Labs’ cloud-based service, BUGswarm.

Bug Labs has posted documentation regarding their hardware and software on their website.

A look at the Bug Labs store page reveals that getting involved in this open source project is pricey: various developer bundles are priced at several hundred to over $1,500.

Maker Faire Day 1 – Weird Stuff

designed after this year’s food poisoning outbreak in Germany, glasses
that light up when you talk, and… well, we don’t really know what this
thing with the big eyes is.

Maker Faire Day 1 – Booth and Exhibits

Some of the most eye-catching booths and exhibits from Day 1
including an open source geiger counter, the 3D printer village, the
youngest Maker at the Faire, and the glow-in-the-dark room. And, in
contrast to the San Mateo Faire earlier this year, we only saw one
steampunk booth!

ATtiny2313 based servo tester


Ejberg.dk has developed this project for a simple ATtiny2313 based servo tester.

This device lets you test servos by varying the pulse width between limits of 0.8000 ms and 2.2000 ms selectable through the use of four buttons.

While the schematic shows an Atmel AT90S2313, the circuit will work with the popular ATtiny2313 using version 2.05 of the code downloadable from the ejberg site. He also has another version of this tester known as the ServoTester2 which uses the ATmega16P.

Logic Sniffer case designs: yaobls case update

Yet another Logic Sniffer case:

I’m interested in releasing some open source board designs under the Creative Commons license. Some of these board designs would benefit from having a small case, so I’ve been looking into various options for getting custom cases built. One of the approaches I investigated was using the Shapeways online SLS (selective laser sintering) 3D fabrication service. In order to gain some experience with the tool chain that I wanted to use to fabricate case prototypes, I decided to design a simple case for the OBLS board in which the OBLS board slides in from the side (so I would only have to design one case part instead of the two case parts I would need for a “clamshell” case design). This became the “-v3” yaobls case series.

Universal Serial Bus general-purpose device controller

The TUSB3210 is a USB-based controller targeted as a general-purpose MCU with GPIO. The TUSB3210 has 8K × 8 RAM space for application development. In addition, the programmability of the TUSB3210 makes it flexible enough to use for various other general USB I/O applications. Unique vendor identification and product identification (VID/PID) can be selected without the use of an external EEPROM. Using a 12-MHz crystal, the onboard oscillator generates the internal system clocks. The device can be programmed via an inter-IC (I2C) serial interface at power on from an EEPROM, or optionally, the application firmware can be downloaded from a host PC via USB. The popular 8052-based microprocessor allows several third-party standard tools to be used for application development.
