Tokyo hackerspace at Make Tokyo Meeting day 1

Tokyo hackerspace invited us to the Make Meeting and shared their space. They scored an extra large space with extra tables for the public soldering area. Anyone was welcome to come use this temporary hackerspace to assemble a kit or work on their projects.

Nimbits 3.3 is live


Nimbits 3.3 is live! With Nimbits, you can record data into “Data Points” hosted on a public or private cloud that can be connected to sensors, social networks, devices, software or anything else. The Nimbits team reports:

This version of Nimbits provides full machine to machine (M2M) communication capabilities using the same protocols as Google Talk and Jabber. We added the ability to add intelligence to your data points using the WolframAlpha computational knowledge engine (the same service that helps power Apple’s SIRI), and the ability to build a Nimbits Ecosystem on a private and public cloud using Google App Engine, Amazon EC2, or your own machines.

Video: Remote control flying machines at #mtm07

During the Maker Meeting two dozen remote control flying machines made of wood, paper, and plastic buzzed and flapped overhead. There were UFOs, sailing ships, witches on broomsticks, and da Vinci-like flyers. We grabbed some of the tiny motors they used at Akihibara. More pictures and a short video below the fold.

#MTM07: Make Tokyo Meeting 07

This weekend was Make Tokyo Meeting 07, Tokyo’s Maker Faire. We were guests of tokyohackerspace. Today we’ll post some of our favorite projects from the Make Meeting. The projects were amazing!

Later we’ll have a video and pictures of our trip to the Akihibara Electric Town market, and Sjaak’s visit to the weekly Tokyo hackerspace meeting.

Papilio One upgrade

Jason decided to upgrade his Papilio One board by replacing the onboard FPGA with a more powerful version.

Ok as you may have seen i have the Papilio One 250 board. I decided to do a upgrade instead of buying the 500E version. I decided to buy just the IC (FPGA) alone and desolder my old 250 IC and replace with a 500E.

This is possible because Xilinx uses a standard VQFP-100 package for their Spartan 3E devices.

iPod FM transmiter

Electronics-DIY has instructions on how to build a simple portable FM transmitter that would allow your iPod to broadcast music over radio waves. It is simple to build and fits into a mouse case.

It works quite easy, there is a power switch on the bottom to turn it on and tune your radio and transmitter to the right frequency. For the antenna you can use a copper wire of 70 cm. The range of this FM transmitter is about 100 to 150 meters (500 feet). With R5 you can adjust the input signal and with C6 you can tune your frequency. Transmitter is supplied by 9V battery.

TI Launchpad plays Bad Apple


Simpleavr writes to inform us of his project using the TI Launchpad to play “bad apple” on a Nokia 5110 LCD breakout. This was his entry into the 43Oh project of the month contest.

He notes that the Launchpad can also play Nyan cat but at a barely recognizable 1 bit color. Nevertheless, the bad apple video is more varied than the Nyan cat vid albeit in monochrome.

PICqueño32 DIP free PCB build

Schazamp posted a picture of his free PICqueño DIP PCB build.

The PICqueño DIP is a PIC32 based Arduino clone, which was designed to be used with standard breadboards. The design called for male pinheaders, but since he didn’t have any around, he decided to solder female headers instead.

Arduino Morse Code generator


Denver writes that he has created a Morse Code generator, and posted a tutorial in my blog about how it is done.

His tutorial begins with an explanation of how Morse Code is organized and proceeds to explain the process of writing an Arduino sketch to produce the sequences of “dits” and “dahs” corresponding to various characters. Rather than spoonfeeding readers with a completely prewritten download of the source code, this tutorial explains the process of writing the Arduino program and provides examples inspiring the reader to expand on them. The only hardware needed in addition to the Arduino is a speaker and hookup wire.
