Here’s a cheap and simple Laser Power Meter LPM for small power source, based on “MarioMaster LPM meter” by Davide Gironi:

This type of meter uses a ThermoElectric Cooling module (TEC) to measure the power of a laser. The TEC will absorb the laser light, and transform the heat generated by the laser beam to an electrical signal.
An operational amplifier is used then to amplify the signal and ouput it to a volt meter.
Voltage meter will display the power in W unit of the laser beam you are testing.
The TEC takes a little amount of time to heat, so wait until your reading became stable.
This type of meter is simple and cheap to build.
It can measure laser power up to 2W, with an accurancy of +-10mW.

DIY Wacom Cintiq project using the LCD panel

Chocochan is working on a DIY Wacom Cintiq project using the LCD panel that is used in the Microsoft Surface Pro tablet:

I wanted something small and portable that wouldn’t take up much space and be light to hold. I don’t have a large desk and I don’t traditionally draw on much that is bigger than A4 (A5 is a comfortable size for me, so anything bigger is a bonus), so all that extra active area Wacom promote on their “Pro” tablets is wasted on me. One thing that Wacom can’t seem to do right is make a lightweight, compact Cintiq. I know that it’s usually the digitiser board inside that causes their tablets to be physically bigger than they actually are, but with screen style tablets; since the digitiser is installed within the LCD panel’s housing, they have no excuse to not make smaller PCBs for the buttons/wheels/whatever.

Hi Guys, today, ElecFreaks will show you a guide how to make a cardboard laser piano by yourself. By this way, I think you do not only could make piano , you can transform a table , a window or a wall to be a Laser Piano or a Laser Harp .
The Cardboard Laser Piano was based on Arduino UNO, with photosensitive modules, laser emitting diodes, JQ6500 voice module combined, the simple electronic piano detects high-low level current outputted by the adjustable photosensitive modules via laser radiation, thereby sending different orders which represent different notes to JQ6500 module. Users can replace notes and songs anytime, only they’ve downloaded the pre-recorded audio into JQ6500 module in advance.

I finally finished my Hakko T12 soldering controller.
Thanks to sparkybg and arhi for all help and sugestions.
Some features of the controller:
– 3310 graphic display
– rotary encoder for easy and fast temperature selection
– sleep mode when the iron is in the stand
– turn off when a long time in sleep mode
– audible indications
– intuitive menu navegation
– percentage visualization of output power
– powered by a compact and lightweight 24V dc laptop power supply
– ambient temperature sensor for a better cold junction compensation
– lcd backlight control
– alarm for very high temperature, turning off immediately the heater
– indication of tip removed to allow hot swapping the tips
– bootloader for easy firmware upgrade via integrated usb port
– usb port and c# software to monitoring all parameters and help to adjust the pid parameters

The controller still need a little adjust in the PID parameters but for me it is almost perfect.

Juan Chong has posted a detailed tutorial on  how to cut out solder stencils for both ExpressPCB and EagleCAD designs on a laser cutter:

In this post I’ll be going over how to cut out solder stencils for both ExpressPCB and EagleCAD designs on a laser cutter. I recently had a need to create some stencils from both of these programs and spent quite a bit of time at the Dallas Makerspace working with their laser cutter to get the settings just right. I’ll be cutting some designs that are mostly 0603/0805 package sizes, so don’t expect ultra-tight pitch stencils from this technique!

On 14 June 2014, team HAG from House4Hack teamed up with HABEX. We released our High Altitude Glider on weather balloons into the atmosphere. After our glider reached the CAA approved height, kilometres up in the atmosphere, we released the glider from the balloons. Equipped with many on-board cameras, telemetry and live video streaming down to us, the aim was to fly the glider from high above earth, in a first person view style, down to mother earth and come land it at our feet. Linux security tip: moving your /boot partition to removable media

Today threats to your data can come from many quadrants. It’s not enough to protect against malicious online attacks; there’s the very real threat of government confiscating and examining the electronic devices carried by international travelers, and even planting spyware. In this post from “The Doctor”, we’re shown one way to mitigate this threat, which involves the use of a USB key that you work to keep out of the clutches of others at all times. He notes, “When you’re trying to fly into or out of an airport en route to someplace else, it is entirely possible that the airport’s security staff will take you aside for a more thorough search and questioning while your stuff is taken someplace out of your control and analyzed. We know that there are malware packages available today that boobytrap the boot device of laptop computers to install various forms of surveillance malware which run the next time you start your machine up and compromise the OS even though you may have locked it down to prevent live attacks. That the malware may capture the passphrase used to unlock an encrypted hard drives in the computer is an additional kick in the pants that one must be prepared to dodge.”

In this application note, we will examine a typical buck topology intelligent SMPS design using the PIC16F785.

The design presented here shows an alternative single-chip approach to adding intelligence to SMPS designs. The basic design is really unchanged. There are current and voltage feedback loops, a counter-based PWM is used to generate the reference voltage to the voltage loop, and the microcontroller uses the reference voltage to modify the operation of the system in response to conditions sensed through the ADC.

ThrAxis DIY CNC mill

Eric has posted details on his build of a CNC mill from scratch.

The ThrAxis (Three-Axis) is a vertical milling machine made mostly from materials from hardware stores. The spindle is a Harbor Freight rotary tool and the motors and controllers are surplus and eBay finds. We made it during lots of late evenings using mostly handheld power tools and “garage precision”. It was a fun project for me to work on with my wife and it’s become a handy tool. I’ve found that it has accelerated my ability to realize my project ideas and has made it much easier to make things with the personal touch. We’ve made toys, art, and mechanisms and we have plans for much much more.

This timer project can be used to switch ON/OFF any device after a set time, this circuit can be used in lots of application like switched ON/OFF Radio, TV, Fan, Pump, kitchen timer, the circuit describe here its unique in its own.
Project has been designed around two CMOS IC CD4001 and CD4020. Two gates of CD4001 make the oscillator and rest has been configured as flip-flop, BC547 transistor is to drive the Relay. Circuit is pretty simple, has jumpers to set the required time duration, Preset is to set the 1Hz oscillator. SW1 is to start the timer, SW2 Power on/off project. Relay output switch contacts can handle 230V AC @ 5Amps
