dop3j0e needed a way to recover the password on his ThinkPad’s hard drive after the laptop’s fingerprint scanner died (in which the password was stored.) Luckily, the drive’s IDE had 16 5V data lines just like the inputs on the OpenBench Logic Sniffer. He wired the Logic Sniffer to the lines and watched the data using Sump. In no time he was able to find the password, unlock the drive, and permanently remove the password.

Hmmmm… Don’t know if this is great OLS promo material.
He points out that he had trouble finding a non buggy firmware for the OLS and RLE didn’t work so he had to rely on triggers.
This is Great! Got me thinking… could we do the same thing with SATA? Can we use the board to act like a SATA host controller just enough to send specific commands to the drive, etc? I do a fair amount of data recovery jobs and something like this would really nice. :-)

How could “01” means user password? According to the ATA spec, it means master password!
