Openbench Logic Sniffer is an open source logic analyzer. It’s designed to support the SUMP logic analyzer software at the lowest possible cost. This project is a collaboration between the Gadget Factory and Dangerous Prototypes.
We’ve got a long-awaited update on probe cables for the Open Logic Sniffer. Word from Seeed is that they should come back from the assembler and be available next week for $6 each. We’re not involved with the cable, it’s an accessory Seeed came up with to make the OLS easier to use.
The cables have a 1×9 connector and 9 leads with tweezer-style test clips. These are the same tweezer-clips used on two leads of the Bus Pirate probe cable, they’re a little delicate but it’s hard to beat the price. Each cable connects 8 of the 16 buffered input channels, plus ground. Two are needed for all 16 buffered channels.
Ace, now all we need is a snazzy case for it to go in :)
$6 hard to beat that I guess, at Maplins in the UK you would not get alot for that lol
if you check the blog of seeed they are talking about a casing ( http://www.seeedstudio.com/blog/?p=988#comment-1751 ). It should be around the same time as the probe set.

Yeah, it would have been nice to have it all in 1 go, less waiting more playing, it took a while to get the BusPirate cables after the preoders too, but they shipped real fast at least I thought so :)
For $6 it’s ok. But the stuff that was available for the Bus Pirate was barely usable for THT / DIP chips.
If you want reliable connections or even use it on the bigger SMD stuff, do youself a favor and buy a set of EZ-Hook XKM.
I wonder if I could get them to add it to my logic sniffer order shipment since it STILL hasn’t shipped… 3 days after they started going out.

The current ones are clearly inferior.
I would like to be able to detach the clips and insert the probes into regular pins like those on a wire-wrap board.
Where can I get a cable with detachable clips like those on the links above?
The probes in the picture are EZ Hooks (XKM?). They are very much nicer than the cheap probes for the Bus Pirate and OLS, but they are also about $2.50 per probe and ~$2.25 in bulk (1000+, I don’t remember 100%, Lady Ada told me about it), so a complete cable is about $30 ($60 for the pair). Since the discount on the quality probe cable is so low, there’s not much price advantage for us to make them in bulk and sell them. We thought the cheap cables would be best for most people, and there’s the option of ordering something fancier if/when you want it.
You can bend the clips a bit to get more grip. It is however a temporary solution since the get loose over time. For hobby use they suffice.
Dunno how many of these projects (logic analyzers, buspirate and such) will come, but is it possible to release a probe set at the same time as the preorder starts?
We’d love to get the cables out at the same time, but we don’t have a lot of control over it. Since we don’t arrange (read:pay) for the cables, we don’t get a firm delivery date, and Seeed probably wants to see how popular the project is before making probes. I’m sorry they weren’t available sooner.
It’s not the probes that I like. It’s the ability to disconnect the probes and be able to stick a female connection directly to a pin.
Take for example, seeed’s bus pirate cable. 99% of the time you want to hook the bus pirate to a product that already JTAG/ISP header pins.
I may end cutting the clips and soldering female connectors at the end (and maybe solder header pins directly to the remaining clips).
I would really like a 5×2 and 1×9 female connector with individual wires terminated by female pin sockets, and let me buy the clips myself.
And BTW, seeed has a distinctive added value for guys like me – those not living in the states can’t really order from places like Digikey, etc. without paying huge shipping fees. I would rather pay $3 a clip to seeed and pay $5 for shipping rather than pay $2.5 per clip and $40 shipping somewhere else.
One can always buy from Saleae right now if they want the XKM clips – $20 for a set of 9 clips. The cable they sell is probably compatible with the OLS too.
