FlorinC posted an update on his HDSP clock project: The only SMD component in the HDSP clock was the USB miniB connector. To make the kit completely beginner-friendly, this connector was replaced by either of its two (right angle or straight) through hole equivalents. More details on Wise time with Arduino blog.

App note: Processing instructions for mounting of through-hole LEDs
Do and don’ts when mounting through-holes LEDs, app note from Vishay. Link here (PDF) Through-hole LED cases usually consist of epoxy casting compounds with duroplastic properties. It is in the nature of things that optical semiconductor devices require transparent materials with the best possible optical features. Unlike standard IC mold compounds, which use reinforcing fillers […]
App note: Through-Hole versus SMD components
App note from Vishay on the advantages of using Through-Hole mounting. Link here (PDF) Most electronic gadgets are designed to interface with humans, and we humans are very abusive to most electronic devices. We drop them, poke them, open and close them, and in general feed stuff into and out of them. It is well […]
NEW PROTOTYPE: USB Infrared Toy through-hole PCB
We took the next-gen USB IR Toy v1.1 circuit and rearranged it into a through-hole PCB. It’s the basic Infrared Toy with a couple additions: Raw infrared signal detector for frequency measurement Breakout area with all the unused pins, tap in and do something interesting Check out the design, and get a PCB for $7.
Free PCB Sunday: through-hole Infrared Toy
We go through a lot of prototype PCBs, and end up with lots of extras that we’ll never use. Every Sunday we give away a few professionally-made PCBs from one of our past or future projects, or a related prototype. Our PCBs are made through Seeed Studio’s Fusion board service. An all through-hole version of […]
