5 LDO regulator considerations other than voltage and current


James Lewis over at Bald Engineer writes, “For an AddOhms series, I created a DIY Arduino I am calling the “Pyramiduino.” It is an ATmega328p based board in the shape of a triangle. Other than being cute, the shape does not offer any other benefit. The design features a 3.3 volt LDO Regulator, which is also the subject of this post.”

  1. Five considerations? That was five re-statements of “read the datasheet and don’t forget the enable pin”.

    Not quiescent current, stability, behaviour under reversed voltage, and all those other useful things?

  2. Yep, what a total waste of time. This guy is an engineer? I hope he does not write tech documentation the way he writes his blog. Clear thinking and clear talking is sorely missing. Agree totally with W that it’s a restatement of just one thing. Five is clearly an invention in order to pad a poor blog post rife with scattershot thinking. How can one mess up an EN pin? It’s a short DS, read the DS! He has trouble with 20 pages? I wonder how many MCU datasheets he has read. He should practice reading MCU DS of 2000+ pages.

    He seems to think most LDOs have an output discharge circuit. Smoking weed?

    He does not actually understand SHDN in MCP1824. It’s CMOS logic with about zero leakage (plus a glitch filter), you just tie it to either (1) VIN, or (2) some kind of control pin or output line in order to control the thing. Don’t let it float and don’t need a resistor.
