    … yet includes a heap of unused PCB material and headers instead of being soldered directly.

    I prototype some small stuff, I use headers and extra material too. it makes it easier to revise things. When it works, it will have headers and excess material until I’m sure the hardware is qualified. When it’s good, make it tight, until then, share pics of it and run the hell out of it!
