Here is an app note from Microchip describing ways to disable global interrupts.
This application note discusses four methods for disabling global interrupts. All discussion will be specific to the PIC16CXXX family of products, but these concepts are also applicable to the PIC17C42.

Guys, make sure you are fully awake before posting… Posting an AN on PIC16CXXX chips in the year 2013???!
Not to say it’s totally invalid, but for substantial programs, let’s just stick to upholding the use of C and leave assembly to heroes…
I too did a double take. This chip was modern 20 years ago.
Funnily enough you can still buy them from microchip. They even have them in stock.
