Introduction to home automation

Introduction to home automation:

We have all see some complex home automation systems, this video made by Jeremy from The Custom Geek gives a good overview of what is involved behind the scenes. This system lives in the garage and interfaces audio, video, phone, intercom, lighting and alarm system. Since the system is all connected it can do things like mute your pounding music when the door bell rings. Jeremy is also making custom hardware like this RGBW LED Controller to add to the capabilities of automation systems.

  1. Awesome job, Jeremy! This appears very similar to one I built for myself:

Glad to know I’m not the only one out here with a passion for this stuff! If you’re like me, it’s more than a hobby – it’s a lifestyle.

    Some comments:
    – I’m not sure where you live, but doesn’t it get hot in your garage during the summer months? I had a major heat problem in my early home automation attempts. In my latest house, I’ve moved everything to racks in the basement to address the heat problem.
    – I love what you said about a true home automation solution being one that you forget you have! I didn’t really realize it until you said it, but I’ve also evolved my solution to mostly focus on turning things off. :)
    – I 100% agree with your approach to integrate the systems together – they are much more powerful together than they are apart.
    – Did you build your house and include the system during the build, or did you retro-fit everything? I could never make a retro-fit look good, so I went with the build option.
    – I moved away from touch screens and to 2-way voice commands because they are easier to conceal and less expensive. Also, I seem to be the only one using the touch screens. Have you found the same?
    – What would you say was the total investment in your system (so far)? If you’re like me, this evolved over years, so it’s hard to track.
    – What lighting system do you use? Is that Insteon?
    – I’ve opted to use SMS text messages for updates instead of hacking the telephone system. Have you considered that?

Your video is an inspiration! Keep up the great work.
