Hacking and moding the TP-Link WR703N OpenWRT Wi-Fi router

TP-Link WR703N is a OpenWRT supported Wi-Fi router that comes with ‘only’ 4MB of flash and 32MB of RAM. If you are not satisfied with these, they are easily upgradable as described in the forum.

RAM can be upgraded to 64MB if you are not afraid of hot air soldering. Just take out one chip from a 512MB DDR 333MHz SODIMM module and replace the one on-board…

It looks like you can replace the 4MB SPI Flash by an 8MB (MX25L6445EM2I-10G SOP8), but this would require an SPI Flash programmer (BusPirate?) to backup and restore the Flash.

    There’s also a cheaper wr702n version with similar board and less memory. I’ve herd it can have its memory extended in the same fashion.

      I’ve just bought one wr702n with hope it is possible. But I can’t find a way how to upgrade wr702n to wr703n without some HW to read from original flash (cFeon QH16-104HIP) and write it to the new flash (S25FL032P or simirar).
      It need also replace Zentel A3S28D40FTP (16MB) chip with Zentel A3S56D40FTP (32MB).
      If there was OpenWRT already it will be possible to unsolder the old flash, put it back ant press to PCB by clothes-peg, boot, read the image to the RAM, carefully replace it with S25FL032P and write image back to flash. But how to do it in VxWorks???
      I spent a half day on googling arround but found nobody who knows how to do it.
      If you have some clue or link post it please.
