I recently compared two similar 3V -> 5V boost circuits, the Sparkfun #08999 5V out @ 100 mA (based on NCP1400) and the Pololu #798 5V out @ 200 mA (based on NCP1402).
The details are below, but the executive summary is: the Pololu 5V boost circuit module has 2x max current and it is cheaper, smaller, has lower noise, and is more efficient at every load current, as compared with the Sparkfun module.

Not really all that surprising. Sparkfun’s designs are usually good and really easy to cut-and-jumper into something else, but they are almost never the smallest or the cheapest. (Also the noise would probably be helped by replacing the output tantalum on the SFE board with a ceramic.)
If you want an even cheaper one go for a RC voltage booster from hobby king http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=11784 I haven’t used in any of my electronic projects but it works well with a 2,4GHz receiver and 4 servos in a DLG RC plane so it can’t be that bad… and it’s just $2,99. It includes two 100uF capacitors, one on input and the other on output.
