A visiting researcher dropped by our humble basement workshop with questions about the physical skill level students would need if they added one of our DIY data loggers to their environmental curriculum. I figured the easiest way to cover that was to simply build one, while they recorded the process.

Maybe it’s because I don’t live in an actual cave, but no amount of years ever resulted in any of my definitely uncleaned PCBs “simply left sitting on a bookshelf inside the house” looking like a full basket of batteries emptied their guts on them, as in the article…
I have to admit the extent of that one took me by surprise too…but it’s not bogus – that really happened. And for equipment deployed in the field we often see the corrosion within 3 months on the student builds, even with desiccant packs, etc. in the housings. So forgive me for using the most extreme example I could find for effect there… it’s just that I don’t want people pouring their time into building these loggers, and then getting no data at the end of it all because they forgot to do the cleaning.
