We go through a lot of prototype PCBs, and end up with lots of extras that we’ll never use. Every Sunday we give away a few PCBs from one of our past or future projects, or a related prototype. Our PCBs are made through Seeed Studio’s Fusion board service.
This week’s free PCB is a new version of the 3 EEPROM test board for the Bus Pirate. We tried to make it cheaper by using SMD footprints that Seeed will fill with parts, and through-hole footprints for working with your own chips. This board is still hung up by the 1-wire components. Maxim might give away lots of free samples, but purchasing 1-wire parts, SMD or through-hole, is really expensive.
Get a Bus Pirate for $30, including worldwide shipping at Seeed Studio. Adafruit also has the Bus Pirate and probe cables in stock and ready to ship.
The high quality picture of this week’s free PCB is thanks to our new scanner, because photographing shiny PCBs is a huge pain.

Maxim is great with the samples yes, but that’s for a reason. 1Wire is tricky as hell. Unlike i2c, or SPI, or 3 Wire or whatever, having an independent time based bus with no shared clock, and power-leaching components means one delayed read or write and you overwrite the wrong register, or the entire transmission dies or the part resets. Samples = Less angry, bulk purchasing clients (read: clients with money to waste on lawyers for baseless lawsuits).
That said, I would like one (you’ve had them on FPS 3 times already :P).
And I have an idea. Since it seems getting the parts for sale are expensive, and the protocol itself is difficult, instead of getting three chips, get just one of the 1-wire to-92 temperature sensors (There is a non-network 1-wire chip that would be great). And sell that on this, with a to-92 package header. So when someone buys this board assembled, they get that, they play around with it, and then they can go and buy/sample/conjure different 1-wire chips if they are so inclined.

I’ve just got a Bus Pirate and would love to get hold of the memory board to help me learn how to use it better.
I often have a situation where I purchase a module that used SPI/I2C/Serial etc and it’s always an issue of quickly having a testbase where I can check the module out.
The bus pirate will go a LONG way to help with that.
