Liquidware is developing a 7” open source hardware Android tablet called Amber.
The Amber is a 7” projected capacitive tablet driven by a 1 GHz, ARM Cortex-A9 OMAP3730 from Texas Instruments. We’ve customized a version of Android Gingerbread 2.3.4 to run on the Amber, and its 2 USB host ports offer high-speed USB and serial communications to a pretty wide range of devices. WiFi, Ethernet, cellular, and battery configurations are available as part of the Enhanced or Pro versions of the Amber.

Can some one explain why this $1000 + hardware tablet is worth the money? For that I could by 2, even 4 cheaper android tablets and just write my own apps?
How is this open source hardware? Where is the source?
This is essentially a tablet dev-kit, for the hw side and not so much the sw side.
Last time I looked, I understood that OMAP can’t be Open Source due to the PowerVR graphics core. Did someting change there?
Looks like there is the same SoC available as upgrade for the still not completely dead Openmoko platform. Still not tempting very much.
