App note: LM5022 DC/DC boost controller

Here is a part from National Semiconductor designed for controlling high-power DC/DC boost regulators. What makes it interesting is that its PWM frequency can be pushed to 2Mhz. This allows for smaller and cheaper discrete components, like inductors and capacitors. The datasheet on this device also provides some nice PCB guidelines to maximize its efficiency and minimize noise.

  1. Marginal advantage not really useful in many cases.
    You are trading switching frequency for smaller component values and bigger physical size.

    And noise and pcb layout become critical.
    coming from a power electronics background i have not yet come across any power application that required more than 150-200 Khz.

    It might have its niche areas but for regular DC DC converters nothing to beat tried and tested 34063/38xx models.

    however i am not posting to criticize. You might want to look at the Texas Instruments TPS54332 too..
    I have used it before and it performed just fine at 800Khz. just a thought..

  2. TRS54332 is a buck converter, the 5022 is a boost, I would be grateful for advice of a similar boost converter( capable of doing 19V-24V conversion with 2A output with internal switch) thanks

    1. MAX1561 offers 26 V max at 1 A with internal 30 V MOSFET, although you do need an external diode. It’s 87% efficient, handles 900 mW, and operates with 2.6 to 5.5 V input. The MAX1561 operates at 1 MHz and the MAX1599 performs the same using 500 kHz switching instead.

      Maybe you could parallel two of these to meet your 2 A requirement. I actually think you may need a controller designed for an external MOSFET if you want 2 A.
