Greeeg tipped us of to some cheap $3 1.3” 96X68 monochrome LCDs. They have a solderable connector with a manageable pitch of 0.6mm. A simple I2C interface protocol is used to interface with these LCDs.
These are Displays from ebay are small B/W displays from the nokia 1202 and a few other models. They do not require a tricky to use “membrane” to connect ITO, on-glass, traces of the screen to your PCB’s traces. and they do not require expensive or hard to find connectors. They feature a 12 pin 0.6mm pitch solderable tab. Ohh and they have a built in Whiteish blue LED backlight.

Looks like the FPC would snap into a connector like the Hirose FH12-16S-1SH(55)
are you sure, because the data sheet calls the part you mentioned 1mm pitch and the lcd is 0.6mm

take a look at the forum topic (link in the post) – there’s a link to the ste2007 datasheet, it looks like you have your choice of SPI, i2c, or async serial. . .

Just thought I’d mention that the ebay seller listed just under the picture above had these displays back in stock some weeks back, though I’ve just checked and again he’s sold out (again) – must be selling fast!
I ordered one some weeks back and it turned up today (about normal post time to me) and I’m happy with it thus far. The screen cover was a bit scratched, but that’s only the plastic film that can easily be changed. The unit came well packed in an anti-stat bag, with a bit of bubble wrap and a fairly solid little box. For $3 delivered, certainly can’t complain. I haven’t tried it out yet and probably won’t get a chance for some time, but these look to be a fairly good and very cheap LCD. Small, but great for little projects by the look of it.
OOPS! – Correction to last post, the guy has relisted and has stock now. He must have got a few extra sales as a result of this post I think, as he’s stuck his price up 50% now!
Still waiting for mine, but good to hear that the first ones arrived.
If anybody knows what the matching connector is, could you please let us know? I’d prefer to use a connector rather than solder it if possible.
I received mine (last week?) I’ll be looking into getting a connector before using it (not sure when that will be). I’ll post an update when I’ve got something that works.

The seller really done a nice job securing the parcel (Every single display was antistatical shielded plus wrapped in bubblefoil).
Looks like I should keep that seller in my watchlist.

@Daniel – Whilst mine was in a nice little new anti-stat bag, inside a little bubble-wrap bag, inside a nice little firm box, the plastic cover over the screen had lots of quite obvious scuff marks, so I’d say more than likely these have been floating around unprotected in a big boxful and just packaged up as they went out. Still, for $3 you certainly can’t complain.
Anybody found a connector yet? I had a search around my usual suppliers, but couldn’t find any 12 pin ones with a 0.6 mm pitch.

Also, you should go and read the forum post (link is above, just under the pic), as there are various links there including one that apparently already has an Eagle footprint, but for me, Mats’ OLEDY board was an easier way to go.
@ Atlas – The pitch is written in the introduction above and also in my post just above, looks like it’s 0.6mm x 12
I just used Mats’ (Matseng from Small Room Labs) OLEDY board, which he very kindly sent me and that worked just fine, so I wouldn’t bother making a special one for this unless you want the circuit and the display on the same board.
I seem to recall the first batch of OLEDY boards had incorrect markings, it maybe had 0.65mm written on it, but that doesn’t matter, it has multiple pitches and you just line up the one that fits and solder it on – simple. You can buy them from his Tindie site here –
