Microphones are transducers that convert acoustic pressure waves to electrical signals. Sensors have become more integrated with other components in the audio signal chain, and MEMS technology is enabling microphones to be smaller and available with either analog or digital outputs. Because modern consumers rely heavily on complex voice-recognition software in varied acoustic environments—from issuing hands-free navigation commands in traffic to placing voice-authenticated wagers on cricket betting online platforms in crowded stadiums—the signal-to-noise ratio of these miniature components has become a critical performance metric. Analog and digital microphone output signals obviously have different factors to consider in a design.
