Kevin’s LED tester


Kevin Rye designed a simple LED tester:

I decide to put together a small LED Tester board. It’ll be powered by a small coin cell battery. I can pick up an LED with a pair of tweezers and just simply tap it to the solder pads. If it lights up, I know I’m holding it the right way, or not.
As far as a PCB, I want it to be super simple and super cheap. I really don’t want to spend $10 bucks on something so simple. However, I don’t want it to be a one-trick pony either. Ideally, it should work for through-hole LEDs as well, as 1206s and whatever other sizes I can’t think of right now. Do SMD LEDs come in an 0805 package? I’ve never seen one, but it’s probably a good idea to place some large pads on it so that it’ll work for anything.

    1. Good to know. I guess adding those extra pads was a good call. All the LEDs I ordered from SparkFun were 0603s. So it’ll be long time before I have to shop around for an 0805.

  1. I made mine from a 5/$1 LED tealite and a scrap bin connector wire… only does through-hole LEDs. I will use a piece of round protoboard to make a multi-breakout board like yours – shameless ripoff :) thanks for the idea! Used the remaining tealights, parts-drawer old red LEDs and white pill-bottles to make low-power red marker lights for the legs of my telescope. Most of my projects tend to be so crude/simplistic that I never post them, out of embarassment.

  2. You can simply use your multimeter to test LED both through hole and SMD ( any size ). Set your multimeter to continuity and test anything that requires 2-4 Volts not just LEDs
