Try large art stores too. I found both violin rosin and larger lumps in an art store. The latter was intended for batik textile art. It’s a nice enough flux and reasonable as a coating, though the copper underneath will slowly tarnish.
You should always clean the flux off of your board when done soldering. It can cause fun things like electromigration (read: will short over time) if left on the board.
You’re right, of course. The flux did stop a watch crystal oscillator in humid conditions, heh. It may be acceptable for casual hobby prototypes, but I agree I wouldn’t want to coat it all over for high-value or high-reliability hobby projects.
