DIY USB slingshot joystick.

Here is a project describing how to build a DIY USB slingshot joystick. The platform is based on a small NXP LPC11U24 breakout board with USB capability, a 3-axis sensor, and a stretch sensor. It is all incorporated into real slingshot frame.

It was inspired as a demo to show off how easy it is becoming to build your own USB devices, thanks to the emergence of ultra-low-cost 32-bit microcontrollers that include USB. There is more about this industry trend and our new mbed NXP LPC11U24 board that we designed to open up these opportunities and enable very productive prototyping of USB devices:

The resulting hack means fusing electronics, microcontrollers, software and, umm…, carpentry!

  1. I’ve been looking at these mbed supported ARM chips for awhile. Some Cortex M0 parts are pretty nice, 32 bit processors at 8 bit prices. But I can’t get myself to accept a proprietary online-only development environment, especially one that reportedly drives actual users to insanity.

    It seems it is possible to do offline development with third party tools such as GCC ARM Embedded, and there is even an mbed page on how to export to offline toolchains:

    But the abstraction introduced by the online only proprietary development environment as a prime resource just bugs me enough to not take the leap. When are these micro-controller Marketing Goons going to realize their biggest obstacle to higher sales is their draconian control over the toolchain? Perhaps never (sigh).

  2. I agree with you Drone, I too didn’t like the idea at all of an on-line only development environment. Let’s hope they wake up to this.
