3D printed wire stripper with a wire contact indicator

Bjbsquared designed a wire stripper tool with a LED indicator that flashes when contact with the wires is made. To built it you’ll need to get the model laser cut from acrylic or 3D printed.

This is one of the best wire strippers I have ever used. If setup correctly, it can be very precise and give feedback telling when the blades have cut deep enough.

    What an awesome idea. Is there even a product on the market with this feature?

    It’s a clever idea, but probematic. The dies of a properly-calibrated wire stripper are not supposed to contact the wire- only neck-down the insulation to the point where it can be easily separated from the conductor.

    Once a conductor is nicked, a stress-riser is created, which makes the wire succeptible to fracture. As one who has once been responsible for failure analysis of electrical systems, and as one who has worked as a production inspector, this is not an acceptible practice, which is why there are no tools (of which I am aware) that use this principle.

    Lest I be seen as the proverbial “pickle in the punchbowl,” I am nonetheless impressed that this person took the time to come up with such a creative design. That, by itself, is an impressive accomplishment. By all means, keep creating, and always solicit the opinions of the community!
