App note: Tire pressure monitoring system

The rfPIC12F675F is a microcontroller with a built in UHF transmitter operating at frequencies between 380Mhz and 450Mhz. It’s basically a PIC12F675 microcontroller strapped onto a UHF transmitter, even the top 8 pins of the rfPIC12F package are pin comparable with the 8pin PIC12F device.

This reference design outlines a wireless tire pressure monitoring system using the rfPIC. The rfPIC reads a pressure sensor and transmits the data over the UHF band to a receiver.

The design covers the pressure measurement transmitter, but for the system to be complete a receiver needs to be built as well.

  1. hmmmmmm. evil thought – TX a signal strong enough to override cars in your proximity to give them virtual flats? But I guess there is a pairing that has to happen first.

    1. Yes, pairing is needed, which is annoying if you have a set of winter wheels (with snow tires) and summer wheels (with higher performance tires).

      I’m thinking of building a receiver so I can read the 32-bit serial numbers from each of my wheels (8), and then also building a CAN transceiver so I can reprogram the car without driving to the dealership after I swap wheels. This is particularly useful if I get snowed in at home and don’t want to listen to the warning about “flat” tires half way across town (assuming I travel further than the nearest grocery store in that kind of snow).
