  1. Using LED’s for detection is neat, you see it a lot in solar trackers. But the circuit shown here isn’t really helpful for bi-directional operation, I think.

    You’d tie the cathode to an IO pin so you can pull it to Vcc or ground as needed, and then use another IO pin to switch between Vcc and Hi-Z (no pullup) on the anode, and leave the receiving circuit attached at all times. Only downside is when transmitting, the input to the 4011 might be in a linear range.

    Might be possible to feed the input directly into a microcontroller too, as long as the pullup can be disabled. You are using 3 io pins, but it eliminates the extra IC.
