  1. Here’s an example of how you add context to a post that just tosses out a part number like some sort of advertisement (is it an ad?). Who the heck is rsdio anyway?…

    The unique things about this part are the on-board digital filter (e.g., typ. 144dB single frequency AC hum rejection), and programmable gain (1-128x). Only certain parts in this family of ADC’s (e.g., MAX11209) have programmable gain. The MAX11209/MAX11211 is 18 bits, there are parts in this family with 16, 18, 20, and 24 bits resolution. Only the 24 bit parts have buffers. See the data sheet for the part numbers of the other ADC’s in this family. The 0.025″ pitch 16QSOP package is hand-solder friendly. As often is the case with Maxim, the part is hard to find and pricey. At writing time (11 Feb. 2011) Octopart says only Digi-Key stocks the part (in limited quantity it seems), and they are $6.42 USD each in unit quantity (ouch). There is a demo board available from Maxim for each of the parts in this family; for the MAX11209 the demo board part number is MAX11209EVKIT+. The demo board is hard to find. Supposedly you can buy it directly from Maxim, but they don’t list the price; you have to request a quotation (grrrrrr). In summary, this is a nice part with some unique features – provided you have lots of pocket change and enjoy bashing your head against the wall actually finding and buying them. Maybe Maxim provides samples, but I don’t like begging and the inevitable follow-up calls and emails aren’t worth my time.

      rsdio is a forum member who shares interesting parts and app notes with me. I post them up because other people might be interested or inspired. I always like to hear about new parts, and rsdio is kind of a filters out the garbage and delivers the interesting stuff.

  3. Hey, Drone, thanks for adding the context. I filter through all the parts and application notes that come my way and pass on the ones that fit into topics that I’ve read on the forum. Then, Ian picks only the ones that he thinks are interesting enough to copy over to the blog. Lately, I’ve been trying to make at least a brief comment about why I think the part ties in to the Dangerous Prototypes community. My goal, at least, is to expand options.

    If you’re willing to add context to any chip or application note here in the comments, then that would be more than welcome!

  4. by the way, is anyone aware of any sample or demo code demonstrating how to interface with this device? So far my search has just found ads and data sheets. It has nine internal registers; four are 8 bits wide, and five are 24 bits wide, so a programming reference would be handy if someone has already done this.

  5. I now have some working Arduino code demonstrating operation of the MAX11209. I haven’t seen any such code example online, maybe someone else would find it useful. Where would be a good place to put it?
