The Federal Communications Commission today released the full text of the Report and Order containing the official net neutrality rules.
What does this have to do with hacking, experimentation or embedded systems? With the move toward increased networking of the devices we develop and experiment with, it is important to know our rights to use and enjoy internet connectivity without interference, restriction or discrimination!

Regulations are a two-edged sword. You might find some day that your little embedded system is in violation of federal law because it does not implement certain protocols the way the politicians understand them. Another possibility is that a large company with an overpriced system could have your independent device shut down for violating obscure net neutrality legislation.
Just beware: That 200-page monster was written primarily by the corporate lobbyists, and support is drummed up by scaring the public about potential abuses that “might” occur without the legislation. The simpler solution is to let people decide with their wallets which kind of ISP is best for them, not by political, one-size-fits-all decision-making. Freedom of choice allows some people to have a completely different internet connection than others, based upon their desire for new protocols or cheaper service. Regulations just mean that we all get stuck with the one kind of internet that the politicians can understand.
