Here’s our first test of the USB to serial mode of the USB Infrared Toy. We used it with a UART-based RFID card reader.
Pictures and a sample Python script after the break.
The USB IR Toy is $20, including worldwide shipping. Every sale supports this open source project.

- RFID TX->IR Toy RX
- RFID RX->IR Toy TX
- RFID ground->IR Toy ground
The RFID reader serial output is connected to the USB IR Toy UART header.

Sample Python Script for the USB to UART mode.
The script resets the USB IR Toy by sending 0x00 five times, then sends ‘u’ to enter UART mode. Then it waits for data from the RFID reader.
The USB to UART mode seems to runs well. :)
