Bus Pirate firmware 5.4 released

Bus Pirate firmware v5.4 is ready for download. This is a recommended update with bug fixes, enhanced features, and major code cleanup. The documentation wiki has been updated with the new commands and macros.

  • Selectable CS pin direction in SPI and raw3wire protocol
  • Partial writes (less then 8 bits) in raw2wire and raw3wire protocol
  • Command ‘i’ is compacted and displays the settings of the current protocol
  • Binmode extended to support buffered writes
  • Support for the new LCD adapter (support for old adapter is discontinued)
  • Updated help screen
  • Some bugfixes, as usual

With this new firmware your Bus Pirate become even more versatile and can even program some microchip PIC controllers out of the box. Not all chips are supported yet, but that will be the goal. A stackable adapter that will program the lower end PIC controllers will soon be available.

Read about the firmware update process for the ds30 Loader GUI (Windows/Linux) and pirate-loader console app (Windows/Linux/Mac). This firmware requires the v4+ bootloader, be sure you upgrade to the v4 bootloader first if you still have bootloader v2.

  1. For some reason I cannot get the DS30 app to work, it says “Nothing to do” and won’t download the new firmware. I think I found the issue though and thats not to “Check for BL” first. The pirate-loader also does this can’t check for the presence of the BP but just writing seems to it straight after booting it works.

Its like you have 1 shot then reset and try again :)

    1. The ‘nothing to do’ message indicate that the bootloader protection has tripped. The easiest way to solve it is deleting the directory and reinstall the application.

      1. Tried that, still no good, but I did manage to update the firmware with the pirate-loader so it must be something im doing wrong.

Firmware 5.4 & bootloader 4.1 is on my BP now.

        Thanks for the help :)

  2. I noticed the image loads from bottom, so I thought is it bmp? And sure it is (checked with file), only renamed to .png. Can you fix it? It’s noticeable when using slower connection.

  3. I fixed the picture, thanks jnd.

I also tested the upgrade to make sure there wasn’t a problem, it appears fine. I guess the ds30loader is just a little temperamental some times. There is a new version available that we can try.
