3D Model: PICqueno32 v1a

Our latest 3D model is the PICqueno32 v1a. This is our knock-off of the chipKIT Uno32 board. It is fully compatible with their IDE.

Check out our tutorial on how to build 3D models from Cadsoft Eagle board files, as well as the tutorial on how to render life like images with Maxwell for Google SketchUp. Later this week we will feature a tutorial on how to use the open source Kerkythea to render your images.

We used open source Kerkythea rendering system to generate the rendered image above.

The models will be published in the Dangerous Prototypes 3D warehouse collection. They are also uploaded to our SVN. You can find them inside the “art” folders in the respective project folders. Check out the 3D view below. You can zoom and rotate the model. (3D Warehouse still hasn’t rendered the 3D view, we’ll update the post as soon as it does)

    I know you have nothing else to do before jumping to China :P, hence would you consider to create the same 3D model with
    Google Sketchup only,
    Maxwell for Google SketchUp
    and Kerkythea.
    I would be really interested to see the difference for one and the same 3D model.
    Please also consider to post some short infos about the workflow, performance and rendering times in a table for comparison (maybe a price tag would be interesting too ;) )

        yes, three rendering images of exactly the same model. I guess its difficult to compare between images of different models Ian posted here over time. He might tweak a lot of parameters completely different over time. Furthermore, most likely Ians skills have grown over time too.
        Thus, creating three images of the same model with basically the same settings would give us an idea in which aspects the results finally differ.
        Finally, it would be nice to see how much effort he had to put inside each workflow. How much time he spend e.g., with each workflow, the rendering time on the same machine, etc. What would be the price to buy the software resp. what is the limitation of the free version of the software.
        According to this, people could easily judge which way they want to go.

        I guess all this is already data he has at his hands and thus, shouldn’t be to much work for him and therefore I hope Ian likes that idea :)

      2. :) I’m the dude you wanna talk too, the models are made with free software only. SketchUp is used to make the model, and Kerkythea and Maxwell are used to make the ricer renderings. Maxwell is free for resolutions of up to 800px while Kerkythea is totally free(open source).

        I’ll provide you with the specifications for modeling later today. Here are the basics most boards are built in about 15min, prepared for rendering in another 30min, and Rendered for about 45-60min on a AMD Athlon II X3 @3.6Ghz (with L3 cashe unlocked)….

        (if a board needs part models that are not available, it takes longer.)

        Kerkythea is a much more powerful system, with lots more options then Maxwell, but unfortunately I haven’t had time to play around with it as much as I would have liked.

        Basically with KT the quality depends on how much time you invest..much better quality is achievable then with Maxwell, but for quick jobs, Maxwell produces much better results…
        With KT you can render videos as well, while with Maxwell you can’t

        I am off course comparing Maxwell free plugin for Google sketchup, there is a commercial product Maxwell rendering engine which is comparable, if not better then Kerkythea, but it is also expensive..

        BTW, I cant really give you a fair comparison, since I am not a professional 3d rendering expert, many of the options on both engines I still don’t quite get. But for more professional stuff KT is better then the free Maxwell version…
