Myriad-RF open source wireless platform

Myriad-RF is an open-source project for the prototyping and creation of fully configurable wireless platforms that run on almost any communication standard and frequency. Its based on the multi standard LMS6002DFN transceiver and Altera FPGA module, allowing for the creation of applications that run on any commercial or whitespace frequency band between 260MHz and 3.8GHz (licensed or unlicensed) and use any communications standard including LTE, CDMA, HSPA+ and WiMAX.

The Myriad-RF low-cost board can be built from open source reference designs and is based on easy-to-use hardware and software platforms. It’s available pre-assembled priced from US$299. NOTE: The fully operational development system contains Myriad-RF board (pictured above) which interfaces via a digital interface board with a DEO–Nano development kit which must be purchased separately. The Myriad-RF is based on the multi standard LMS6002DFN transceiver, which allows for the creation of applications that run on any commercial or whitespace frequency band between 260MHz and 3.8GHz (licensed or unlicensed) and use any communications standard including LTE, CDMA, HSPA+ and WiMAX.

    One of the example projects has an arduino talking to it over SPI, so an extra FPGA board isn’t strictly required – at least for less demanding comms tasks.

    Very interesting. I’ve been looking at the Lime Microsystems LMS6002, nice to see an open-source demo board design. But at $299 each the Myriad board is a bit of a stretch for me. One of the first problems for anyone wanting to use the open board design from Myriad (in KiCad – Yay!) is the LMS6002’s DQFN120 footprint.

      Myriad-RF is vaguely similar to HackRF, but it’s somewhat like comparing apples to oranges. HackRF is a complete USB SDR peripheral. Myriad-RF is just the RF/ADC/DAC section. HackRF’s RF/ADC/DAC section has some advantages and some disadvantages compared to Myriad-RF. HackRF has a wider operating frequency range. Myriad-RF has a higher maximum sample rate. HackRF has more amplification (I think). Myriad-RF can operate in full-duplex mode whereas HackRF is limited to half-duplex operation. A better comparison to HackRF would be UmTRX or bladeRF, both of which are complete SDR peripherals that use the LMS6002D.

      I decided against the LMS6002D for HackRF because I found that I could build a solution with a wider range of operating frequencies at a lower cost. 30 to 6000 MHz covers quite a bit of interesting spectrum outside of 260 to 3800 MHz. I was willing to give up some things like full-duplex operation and on-board DSP capability in order to achieve the lowest cost and widest frequency range.
