Raj has posted this tutorial at Embedded-Lab on building wireless sensor applications using Dorji’s DRF4432S and DRF5150S RF modules. “The interesting part of these RF modules is they have an additional preprogrammed microcontroller on board that allows direct connection of selected analog and digital sensors to the modules.” Raj’s article describes these two modules briefly, and illustrates how to put them together to construct a simple wireless sensor application where data from a remote sensor are received and displayed on a PC, without using any external microcontrollers.

I might go so far as to say that most “RF modules” these days are combinations of MPUs and transceivers. The (now Digi, formerly Netstream) XBee modules that have been around for many years have digital and analog inputs with which goodies can be tasted and transmitted. There’s a better than 50-50 chance that when you crack one open you find an 8051 or similar 8-bitter inside. Pretty much every XBee-socket-compatible, no matter what the protocol (BT, Zigbee, 802.15.4, etc.) is put together this way. Some even support adding your own application into them if you have the toolchain parts to do so.
