Circuits@Home has two Arduino USB Peripheral/Host Controller shields with the MAX3421E we covered earlier.
A driver is available for the Arduino, which should be portable to other microcontrollers. There are also libraries for working with USB devices, such as cameras, bluetooth devices, and simple Human Interface Devices like mice and keyboards.
I would like to point out my whole board is only 3 dollars more than this shield… and it can source enough power to drive a 2.5″ hard disc…

Very cool and a lot cheaper than the TI boards. Two thumbs up.
Spread the word, I don’t think many people know it exists… I haven’t had a lot of sales yet… Suggestions welcome. I felt it was fairly priced and that I had a lot better docs than most dev boards for use with open tools (GCC generic)…
I will make some projects with it myself over summer but for now I don’t have time.
To be fair, it would appear the ARM chip with integrated USB host/device/OTG controller you’re using is also cheaper to buy than the MAX3421E – but yeah, this shield isn’t great value for money. Not everything has to be Arduino based.
Depends on what the mark up is but yeah they cost within a dollar the point was not the value of the chips but the value of the board features, you have to have a MCU to use the MAX3421E in addition… STM32 might be cheaper if you want bottom cost.
