  1. Sorry for ranting around, but 15 $ is quite expensive compared to some available ft232-boards, and the MCP2200 itself seems to be inferior compared to the well-proven ft232.


    1. Hi Jan – Good point, I agree that the MCP2200 isn’t as versatile as the FT232. We made this board out of curiosity, because we had several requests for it, and nobody else was selling it.

      There are two things driving the price. First, we only do very small batches (25 in this order) of niche designs for our community, we’ll probably never reach the cost and profit margin of major producers on a design like this. Second, when I set the price I searched SparkFun and Adafruit for (all-pins) FT232 breakouts and set the price the same as the cheapest I could find. There may be cheaper boards, but this is the same price as our reference open source hardware outlets.

      Your point is taken though, and if we ever have the chance to produce 500 of these I’m sure the price will be lower.

    2. The first (ever) design is always more expensive then a design based on a chip that is around for ages.

      Adding: the MCP2200 has some (hidden) features to make it more versatiler :)

  2. During todays lectures I was dreaming of Dangerous Prototypes programmable high power LED driver (Version 1: maybe 1-3 LEDs in the range of 1W..10W). Could this be done? :)

    There are programmable LED drivers around, I don’t know if any of them are open source. I can search for more info if there is any interest.
