Hacking Kinect with a USB analyzer

Posted on Wednesday, December 8th, 2010 in hacks, reversed, USB by the machinegeek

Ladyada explores the Kinect protocol using a USB analyzer. While we know the Kinect has already been cracked, this is a good example of how USB analyzers can be a helpful (though costly) addition to a workbench.

Hopefully OpenVizsla ( will be the answer to all these expensive USB hardware sniffers.

hi, nice video, did you use a standard usb-cable to connect kinect your analyzer box, or did you need to use the special microsoft cable with extra power supply (like this one: Not sure if normal USB power cupply via a PC or laptop is enough to power kinect, as at least old XBoxes seem to need this extra power!

I want to capture the skeleton and depth data from the Microsoft Kinect connected to the Xbox via the application running in my windows 7. The protocol analyzer device can capture the data using the analyzer software. However, Windows could not detect Kinect if it is connected via the Protocol Analyzer. Could you please advice me how can i sniff the data from the Kinect connected to Xbox using Kinect SDK? I also tried USB Y cable, but it didn’t work.

    Kind Regards

How can program on computer to get serial data from DB9 serial port…. please help me..
