Either way, not the best place to save a couple of bucks.
So… How do you figure that this psu is so much worse than all the other extremely cheap psus that all the small mom&pop computer shops put in the no-name computers they put together every day?
or, you use it with the dangerous prototypes ATX board and have a cheap power supply, I guess that’s what it was about really.

as far as using it for a pc it would only reliably power a lo-end cpu and gpu and maybe 2 hdd, the minimum power for most work stations currently is somewhere around 500watts.
but for turning into a bench supply this is more than enough, as long as shipping is low enough

perhaps i should have included overhead in my previous statement, this is where i am coming from.
if you run the bare minimum required power supply, when under full load or near full load(especially hot days) you will have power quality issues when pulling the max out of your psu. I have seen many bring machines to me that others build using a bare minimum psu, all kinds of performance problems can be tracked back to using a psu that is not up to the task. even with higher quality power supplies.
the old phrase “garbage in garbage out” is well suited to power supplies. and as a general rule i always overbuild by about 30% this allows for some upgrades in the future too.
Better off buying a used name brand power supply. E.g., Enermax Liberty PSUs are under $20. Built a lot better.
Heh. I sent this in yesterday when it was really free with free shipping (in US, after rebate) and you could buy 3 of them because the actual rebate limit is 3. I did also mention specifically that it was a one day only deal and that they would be perfect for ATX breakouts. But oh well.
