As an alternative to the use of PALs, GALs, or CPLD devices to implement a non-volatile gating function, these circuits store the gating signal (block or transmit) using a digital potentiometer (MAX5427 or MAX5527) controlled by a serial interface.

e.g. dual: 7474, 7476, 74106, 74109, 74111, 74112; quad: 74175, 74276; octal: 74273, 74363, 74364
… or, as the article suggests: a PAL, GAL, CPLD, or FPGA along with a bothersome custom programming.
With 5v and 3.3v micros needing to interface with various chips needing 5v, 3.3v, 2.5v rather than use the common idea of a fixed resistor dividers, which locks you into the particular voltages, using digital pots would give you a programmable interface voltage for the data lines. Probably just another weird, over-kill idea for these, since there are better solutions to level-shifting data voltages.
