I thought that one looked very cool, but it's really expensive if you're not actually in Shenzhen. I don't suppose you've seen it any cheaper than ~$150 USD outside Shenzhen?

Mine is actually Spersder PE-986A but seems exactly the same as all the 983s out there. There are jumper switches on the back, but the meaning is unclear as the manual is totally in Chinese.  Here is some info from an aliexpress comment:

Quote
The DIP switches have multiple functions. All DIPs down and becomes completely manual with box, pedal or barrel 'shot' switch controlling dispense time. All DIPs up and keeps repeating for set dispense time at set interval time. DIP 1 down and DIPs 2, 3 and 4 up then will keep timed dispensing at set intervals while 'shot' switch is pressed . Other DIP positions set shot number per press

@nick - never looked, but seeing now on aliexpress they are WAY too expensive. Pre-bargain price on this was $45 USD.

the cheapest ones I have found is the 982, but doesnt have the display
http://www.ebay.com/itm/281035120564

But I guess its better to get an unit that others have already experience with, easier to get help/tips for usage. And pre-bargain price of $45 is very good!
I guess tips and so on is very cheap there also?

They have cases and counters full of all imaginable syringes and tips and related paraphernalia. Most of it is pennies. I'll need to find out which type I like, then buy a bag of them. The selection is overwhelming.

yea, I bought some bags with tips from an dealer, but it's difficult to know which sizes you actually can use, so for me, who is not even Gauge compatible (I'm metric), I easily would sit with bags of useless tips;)

Got the compressor. It's cute, but probably a 24L would have been better. It seems to need to (loudly!) add air after a dozen or so shots with the dispenser.

Have not got the dispenser working yet. Even at 100PSI nothing comes out. I can see the plunger move and the hardware works great, but I think there is too much paste in the syringe and it's like the Mr. Wizard experiment where a tissue over a paper towel tube filled with salt can withstand a broomstick blow...

Will try some more once the neighbors wake up :)

Im assuming you took it right out of the fridge? I think the solderpaste needs to be at room temp to be more fluid.

I'm curious if you can estimate how much air is used for each dispensing - perhaps by checking the pressure gauge after a few shots? I really want to try one with bottled gas, but that only works if my estimates about how long a bottle will last are correct.

I did let the paste warm. Using less and bigger needle with high pressure seemed to help. Still working it out and will try a new solder paste now.

IT uses quite a bit of air. My 6L tank goes from 100psi to 50psi (if turned off) in only a few dozen shots.

The mechanic paste works _way_ better. I don't think the sparkle paste is formulated correctly for the dispenser.

Wow, that's way more than I expected. Does it sound like it's leaking anywhere when you're not using it?

50 PSI is 3.4 atmospheres, which means you went through about 20.4 litres of air in 'a few dozen' shots, which I'm going to randomly guess at 36, which means about half a litre of compressed air per shot.

A disposable welding gas cylinder contains 390 grams of CO2, which is about 197 litres of air at STP - working out to only about 400 shots per cylinder(!), or 3.5p each!

A small beer gas cylinder contains 3.15KG of CO2, which is 1590 litres, so you'd get about 3000 shots per cylinder, or about 0.5p each. At that rate it'd take about 12,000 shots to pay for a compressor.
