which oscilloscope to buy for 1000 euros?

Postby octal » Sun Nov 11, 2012 3:16 pm

Did anyone tested the Rigol DS2102 oscilloscope?
I'm tempted to buy a new scope, with at least 100MHz freq. I have a budget arround 1000 euros.
I checked Rigol offering, and I have found two references:

Rigol DS1202CA (755. euros)
High quality 2 channel DSO with 200 MHz bandwidth and 2 GSa/s

Rigol DS2102 (966. euros )
High quality 2 channel DSO with 100 MHz bandwidth, 2 GSa/s and 14 Mpts memory depth.

on the DS2102, the main interresting points (**for me**) are:
- the big display (since the scope has good mem depth, you can see a lot without zooming/unzooming)
- the trigger that can be set even on new advanced video modes (HDMI, ...) and on high level I2C/SPI/RS232 data packets.
- It can decode signals (software option to buy alone).
- it has two independent time bases

the DS1202CA instead have nice 200MHz bandwidth and nice buffer.

Has anyone tested both?
do you have other suggestions (from other brands)?

for around the 1k euro mark, you should look at the tektronix offering, there at least 4 different models starting around that price.

I checked Agilent and Tektronix models, with 8" disp and 100MHz bw, they are almost all priced >1300 euros . Maybe I'll be looking at refurbished ones. The Rigol still has a lot more memory depth than those.

check the element 14 store, they always have some kind of deal going for scopes, i think all tek 4000 series is 10% off right now

i have used b&k its a good value. should be able to find one for under 1k with 100Mhz bandwidth.

I dont think there are as many agilent scopes under 1k euro (my conversion may be off)

what type of signals will you be looking at? do you need advanced features?

Problem is that 1000 euros is the price between entry, hobby level and pro scopes. You are right, Ridgol is the highest memory depth between competitors.
Last year, I also checked many forums before I bought a new DSO. It head ached me a lot but my budgets is limited to hobby levels scopes and ended at buying Ridgol 1052E.
If I were you, I will consider a mixed signal scope or spent more money and will get Agilent or Tektronix because these are pro in their line. In new line, HAMEG HMO 722 is also not bad, lower bandwidth but mix-signal and specs are interesting.

I don't mean Ridgol, Atten, Owon, Siglent, Uni-T are not good. As you know, the all also have their pros and cons. BTW, here is interesting link, based on Ridgol and other many. Honestly, the thread has 65 pages and I lost on the way. :D

I'd vote for Rigol. Best bang for the buck.

This anti-spam stuff sucks.
