PAW8 - NU-FitHole

Postby matseng » Mon Jan 28, 2013 4:16 am

As mentioned in an earlier post I'll try to do one small PCB project every week and then send for PCB's of it every Monday.

This weeks PAW will be extremely simple - it's not even a breakout board, but it might still come in handy for people making PCBs. The FitHole is a tool for testing what drill size that best fits a part that you're making a library footprint for.

It have holes in sizes from 0.4 mm to 2.3 mm in increments of 0.1 mm, plus a hole that is 3.0 mm as well as a 6.35mm that is Seeedstudios largest standard drill size.

The 6.35-hole might also be used to put the tester on your keychain so you don't lose it. :-)

@matseng
Would you mind if I use the title of your "NU-FitHole" for a new rejuvenating topical cream I'm creating? LMAO

Are they plated or just drills?

I wonder if Seeed will have issues with this one, sometimes fabs don't like too many drill changes.

They're all plated except for the 6.35mm hole.

Dolabra: They might dislike it, but I've done similar boards before at both Seeedstudio and Itead.

But it's a part of the PAW project - to explore where their real limits are. Step & repeat five times the maximum number of subboards = ok. Extremely strange shape with twelve 6 mm wide arms from a pcb = ok. More than twenty different via sizes = ok???

This is a great idea - I'm a firm believer in measure twice cut/drill once! Not to mention a practical tool to find out what drill size you will really need instead of the oblong via shown in the datasheet.

I got a Xmas gift test card from Iteadstudio that I could use for that. It won't fit on a key chain though!

It will take more than a while to get these from Seeed. Their fab is closed until 16 Feb for CNY/Spring Festival and after that there will be a huge backlog and on top of that 3 weeks shipping time....

The files are available at https://github.com/SmallRoomLabs/NanoUt ... NU-Fithole

Currently the gerbers are for the board with five copies on them, but the Eagle files have a wider margin between the boards for easier cutting so they only have four copies.

But PM me your address and I'll send you another hole-measurement PCB I did some years back.

Sent the gerbers to Seeed.... But the CNY/Spring Festival will delay the production for at least 14 days.

I'd also be interested in getting hold of one of these, happy to cover your costs, etc.

great idea, mats. Something like this was one of the first "boards" I did when I started etching my own boards - and it's come in handy ever since.

One other suggestion for a board like this would be to include several silkscreen widths/heights - it really helps (me, anyway) when laying out a board to get a "real world" feel for what I'm designing. There's nothing like seeing a 5-10 mil silkscreen line that's 30 mils high (in person) to remind me just how small I'm making the reference designators!

I'll send boards to those who wants one when I get them from Seeed....

bearmos: You mean like on this slightly bigger footprint & hole tester I did two years ago?
