This may sound like a stupid idea, but what about using Fulfillment by Amazon? Seller can remain ownership of product, and it's just stored in an Amazon warehouse.. buyers get local US shipping (and can use Prime if they have it for free shipping). Maybe just list at a slightly higher rate for whatever cut Amazon takes for fulfillment service.

but yeah, would still have the problem of 'we have 100 sitting in the warehouse, and nobody is buying them' or worse, a v2 or v3 hardware comes out, and v1 is still rotting..

Btw, rsdio can you PM me the two Seattle companies you reference? I've been looking for some in that area for prototype work..
