IRToy problems installing on Linux (Fedora 17)

I followed all the instructions on wiki. But IRToy is not working. lircd daemon seems to be happy and does not complain. When I execute irw&, then irsend <whatever params necessary> I see nothing printed or happening.

What can I do to further troubleshoot?

Even tried installing a modified lirc package mentioned in a recent thread, which replaces --device=irman to --device=usb_irtoy. That did not work though. I had to convert .deb package to .rpm via alien. Have checksum conflicts during install.
