IRToyRecPlay Ubuntu Terminal Issues

I have been using the IRToyRecPlay program under Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.
I have tried the debian5 version and the fedora14 version.
After I run either version with the -r flag, the terminal goes into a funny mode in which (a) characters (except the ENTER key) are not echoed but are processed, (b) the ENTER key causes a new-line, but not a carriage return, and (c) the BackSpace key does not cause a back space and it echoed as ^?. After I run the program, I can correct all these keyboard problems with this one Linux command:  stty sane
