client Test Mode

How does one effectively use this, I've just updated to firmware 3 and the latest test release, as a quick test i tried to use it but was unsuccessful?

To make use of the Test mode

1. firmware v0.4(or newer) must be installed in the PIC
2. bitstream release 2.04 must be installed in the SPI flash (test mode is not available in the release 2.03 bitstream)
3. a 18 pin .100" spaced header must be installed on the bottom/second/wing port
4. a 36 or 40-pin flat ribbon cable or female jumper wires of 100mm length must be used to connect/bridge the pins of the two probe headers (0--16, 1--17 ... 15--31 and GND--GND)
5. only the latest SUMP Java client (included in 2.04TestRelease.zip) supports the test mode - in capture configuration
    - select Number Scheme "Test Mode",
    - Clock Internal,
    - any Sample Rate,
    - Channel Groups 0 and 1,
    - recording size up to 8k (? - it doesn't really matter as the test is cyclic),
    - Noise Filter on or off,
    - RLE disabled

/EDIT/ With the standard settings (100MHz, 2k samples) you should get a result similar to the one shown on the pic below.

P.S. eventhough GND on both probe headers is connected via the PCB, I found connecting GND of the two headers with a cable reduced sporadic glitches.

hi IPenguin
thanks for clearing up the details.I think this kind of info can clear up/speed up a lot of testing time-
i finally deduced what needed to be done.
see pics in http://dangerousprototypes.com/forum/in ... pic=576.60

hopefully the picture is supportive of your test description

Hi swissMac,

Thank you for starting this thread and the picture(s) (I added one to my previous post, too). Indeed, we need some clear and simple instructions/guides for new OLS users so they know where to start, where to find the most stable and the experimental firmware/bitstreams/clients and how to use it. By now the info is spread out and hidden in multiple threads on this board - in some cases it's incomplete and in other cases essential information is even missing. Pointing out such gaps/lacks, asking for information and providing feedback will help to improve and to drive this project on.
