If 1A would not be enough you can use the LM2576 or LM2596. I have built a couple of boards with the LM2576 and LM2596. These are 3A switch mode regulators, similar to the LM2575. I quite like them as they are cheap and easy to find. I have only used through the hole components in my designs so far, but working on a board with only smd parts. My biggest problem was finding the right inductors, eventually I got some on Ebay.

I really like the Murata OKI-78SR modules.  Relatively cheap, 1.5A max output, efficient, same pinout as the 7805.

They're a little noisy for extremely sensitive stuff, but great for everything else.

I'm currently waiting for a DX SKU 144860 to arrive. It's just $5.52. Haven't tested it yet but it have nice reviews and i'm planning to use it to power Raspberry Pi off 3 Li-ion cells.

I know its a old post, but this PSU looks really interesting, i am a beginner, and if possible, please post this PSU schematic? I really like to study this one!
