Dangerous 3D Models

We've started to build SketchUp 3D models of our projects. We use the EagleUp script.

You can find the models we've built so far in our SVN. You need to download them into the directory that's linked by the EagleUP script...

More part models will be uploaded soon..If you'd like to donate some of your models plz post them in this thread , just compress them with your favorite archiver and upload them to this thread. Or link to their 3d warehouse link, if you've already uploaded them there. Pictures are welcome as well.

The eagle up script builds everything at 1000X scale, so 1mm is 1m..you can post files in different scale as well.

We will also try and upload all the components to the 3D warehouse at some point...

As always any comments, suggestions,ideas, or questions are very welcome..

You can download it from the 3D warehouse or from our SVN "art" folder inside the Web Platform folder.

Also available is our 3D model Part library, Its composed mostly of EagleUp and 3d Warehouse models that were renamed to match our footprint names.

Ok, do not mock me!

Following as closely as possible Filip's explanations on the blog, here is my first attempt to render my board using the EagleUp/Sketchup/Kerkythea combination:

Probably far from perfect, but I am not a specialist: I don't even know how to make the LED lenses transparent, for example!

However, I know modeling better, and had to create all the missing parts that you can see here:
  • Hirose UX60-MB-5ST Mini-USB receptacle
  • APEM ADTSM32 tactile buttons
  • Samtec FTSH-105-01-L-DH R/A connector
  • Molex 22-28-4200 bottom pin header rows
  • NDK NX5032GA 12 MHz crystal
  • NXP LPC1343 microcontroller in LQFP48 package
  • NXP PRTR5V0U2X protection diodes in SOT143B package

Awesome looking model/rendering, I especially love the USB jack, both the model and how it rendered, it really looks awesome. For glass materials, I think you also need to download a material pack from kertythea.
maybe this one Basic Glasses
*PS, may we use it in our Dangerous Prototypes models in the future

Wiki is great go for it.

That render looks photo real, at least on this phone :) nice work!

You can use the models as you wish, I release all this under the Creative Common CC-BY-SA 3.0 licence.

This is my way to give back to the Community, and to DP in particular!

However, be careful with the Mini-USB connector: it is the Hirose UX60-MB-5ST model with positioning posts featuring an unusual 3.5 mm spacing... Unfortunately,  this is the one I chose for my PCB, based on a footprint I found in a SparkFun Eagle library!

For the records, I modeled the Mini-USB connector from the datasheet above: I extracted the top/front/left views into bitmaps with the highest possible resolution, then constructed the 3D from these, with the help of the mechanical drawings within the USB 2.0 spec for contact details. It took me one week on my spare time, as this was my first time with Sketchup! It should only take me a few evenings to redo the same kind of things in the future.

My plan for the next version is to replace it with the Micro-USB I already modeled, as it is both smaller and supposed to withstand 10x more plug/unplug cycles.

Thanks, I added your USB model to the model we'll feature tomorrow, expect to be mentioned :)
BTW I am unsure if you can license your models as CC-BY-SA 3.0 if you upload them to the 3d warehouse, I think the Google license(terms of service) handles all models in the 3d warehouse.

I have to say again that the USB model is very impressive, may I ask how you modeled the metal exterior. did you make front face and extruded it, than edited it, or did you draw it line by line?

OK, let's say it is under Google license, then, good enough. If possible, I just want to get a little credit for them, that's all, and your compliments are my reward.

I used to do technical drawings on paper in a previous life, so I started with the 2D projection views from the datasheet and a real world connector sample. I sketched the front profile and extruded it, added the legs, etc. The worst were the plug locks on the top face, as they are seriously bent in several places: basically, you have to sketch them from above, then from the side and extrude both vertically and horizontally respectively, then intersect and "unmold" by removing the extra outer volumes. Also, I found that smoothing curves and removing some edges with Ctrl+Eraser in Sketchup makes the rendered objects look much better.

Here is a second attempt to render the board, where the USB connector details are put in evidence, as well as the R/A connector in the back of the scene.

I added a light to make the scene brighter, and changed the MLCC capacitors to smooth their edges like the real ones. A also changed the "black plastic" material to be less shiny, and the LED lenses are now transparent!

However, my attempts to "turn on" a LED were unsuccessful...

played around with Kerkythe over the weekend, and made some improvements to the board reanders....

the boards texture as it was, is just a image overlayed over the 3d model. the image in itself had a little errers, like the white silk was still going over pads and such....

to increase the photo realism of board images I added a bump map to the material, the bump map is just the actual copper Gerber png... this makes the copper stand out mre on the renderings, I also used another mask to delete everything on the pads and re generated the pads as shiny metal surfaces, they respond to light differently then the board material.

I'll add a little how to here, when I get the time...

This is the FunCube Dongle!

I found the USB enclosure they used, and the manufacturer provides a 3D CAD model:

After several conversions, I turned it into a Sketchup model and used Kerkythea to render it. Still a few problems with the resulting model, but I thought it was still worth showing it!

Sorry, I don't have the PCB files, so I cannot render it...
