Bus Pirate Pins to SOP8 chip attachments to dump flash?

Hey guys,

I just got my bus pirate and I'm wanting to dump the spi flash off some chips. I currently have my Bus Pirate and the Bus Pirate cable it came with which one end goes into the chip on the Bus Pirate and the part with 10 different color endings. I'm trying to figure out what the proper dangling color cables I have to use from the 10 wires to the SOP8 chip pins has to be, which has the 8 pins and then the top connects to my wiring and clip.

Thanks!

Hi kernelimage.
It totally depends on which chip you are dealing with.
Based on that you will use the appropriate wires connecting them accordingly.
Another thing that could make the difference is your Bus Pirate, that is if it is from SeeedStudio, SparkFun Electronics or it is a clone, because the arrangement on its pins changes from manufacturer to manufacturer and so the connection cable which could also have wires of different color based on who built the Bus Pirate.
Please take a look at this:

Hey thanks for the reply! I currently have the Bus Pirate 3.6a by spark fun. I'm a complete noob at this so I'm still trying to figure out where I have to put the connectors onto the SOP8 chip pins correctly.

Does the chip have any marking? What did it come from? You could look at data sheets for common flash ROMs, modern ones are pretty similar but older ones who knows. You could also look at the circuit it came from to guess the power and ground pins. That would be a start.
Got a question? Please ask in the forum for the fastest answers.
